The energy industry is witnessing dramatic changes. Electricity demand has been stagnating while new technologies such as distributed generation & electric vehicles, and evolving regulations are rapidly changing the nature of our industry. This environment makes it imperative that we look beyond business as usual and explore new growth opportunities. However, building new growth businesses requires a shift in mindset from our existing big to bigger approach to a lean startup philosophy which rapidly validates business ideas with minimal investments and de-risks them before they scale. We call this the Exelorate Growth process. The Exelorate Growth program has been responsible for launching businesses like Clearsight (AeroLabs), Steer, and ecoCRED among others.  



In this 10-week internship, you will be a part of the Exelorate Growth Team and tasked with developing and assisting new businesses in an assigned Opportunity Area. Current Opportunity Areas include DER Intergration, Empower, Sustainable Communities, On Demand, and Mobility.


Based on your assigned Opportunity Area, you will be partnered with Co-Founders currently working on early-stage businesses as well as tasked with developing additional business ideas through the Exelorate Growth Process. The final deliverable will be a pitch presentation to Exelon Senior Leadership with a specific recommendation to either pursue the project or put it on hold.




To identify and develop new businesses through market validation of problem-solution and business model hypotheses. To assist development of current business opportunities. To drive the direction of the team‘s work, while ensuring the quality of outcomes.







  1. Sectoral/thematic understanding and idea generation (Discover & Generate):



    • Develop & maintain holistic view of a specific sector or theme (Opportunity Area) through market sector analysis including industry and market trends, problem sizing, value chain, customers, competitors and busines s  models

      2. Experimentation and analysis to refine and prove problem-solution and business ideas (Validate):

    • Identify and prioritize Key Assumptions underpinning the problem-solution hypotheses
    • Design and execute experiments that can quickly, inexpensively and conclusively validate/invalidate the key assumptions
    • become the expert in developing customer relationships, research plans, and programs to test and validate hypotheses through an iterative series of rigorous experiments
    • experiments may include customer interviews, focus groups, sales calls market research, prototyping & product-market fit testing
    • Adopt & leverage the Exelorate Growth mindset to:
    • operate with speed and economy
    • unearth human & market insights and develop prototypes
    • Develop and dynamically adapt business models for concepts where problem-solution hypotheses have been validated
    • Synthesize data and track validation metrics to understand team progress
    • Work with a Co-Founder collaboratively and efficiently in a way that balances strengths and developmental goals

      3. Sharing results (Report & Collaborate):

    • Make weekly presentations to the Executive Sponsor about assumptions, experiments, results, and progress towards the goals
    • Share learnings & spark collaboration with peers across the company through Exelon’s Reinvent platform and other networking activities


  • Prior experience in an entrepreneurial or changing environment
  • Self-starter capable of acting with high degree of autonomy
  • Strong project management skills
  • Ability to navigate different levels of the organization, solicit feedback, and turn that into constructive next steps
  • High level of comfort navigating ambiguous and unregimented opportunities
  • The ability to break down complex problems into hypotheses, develop clear plans for validation, and to tie results to insights and concept refinement
  • Prior success managing consumer experiments, including customer discovery, in-market testing, and product/market fit
  • Broad understanding and past exposure to the energy industry
  • Deep personal interest in energy technology, startups and innovation
  • Experience in sales/marketing
  • Affinity for creative thinking
  • Ability to use data and evidence to tell a compelling story
  • Ability to work with technical resources
